Golda O. Newton

MOUNTAIN GROVE - Mrs. Golda O. Newton, 93, Mountain Grove, Mo., passed away at 10:25 a.m.. Friday, April 10, 1998, in Primrose Place, Springfield, Mo. following a long illness.

Mrs. Newton was born April 25, 1904, near Hartville, Mo., the daughter of John and Sally (Walker) Scarborough. In September of 1927 whe married Jerry Newton, and he preceded her in death May 30, 1949.

Golda attended Norwood schools and graduated from SMSU, and achieved her Master's Degree from the University of Missouri. Her teaching career included 50 years in area schools, including the last 39 years as an English teacher in Mountain Grove High School. During her career, she was honored as "Woman of the Year" by the Business and Professional Womens Organization

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Terrell and Ray Scarborough.

She is survived by a nephew, Terrell Scarborough, Parsons, Kan.; four nieces, Jo Anne Feese, Kirksville, Mo., and Betty Callaway, and Frances Turner, both of Springfield, Mo.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral servies for Mrs. Golda O. Newton will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 1998, in First Baptist Church, Mountain Grove, with the Rev. Gene Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery under direction of Craig-Hurtt-Bradley Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Thursday until services in the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Senior Scholarship Fund at Mountain Grove High School, c/o the Funeral Home.
